It were the African slaves who brought the Marimba to Latin America. Today, the instrument plays an important role in the traditional music of twn different Latin American countries, but it is most emblematic for the music of the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Since 2008, the Institute has a Marimba ensemble that dedicates its time to the study of Mexican music. Joining the ensemble is possible through a music practice course within the study of musicology. Aside from this regularly offered course, a beginner and an advanced group – all led by Daniel Fuchsberger – are open for all interested in playing Mexican Marimba music. In addition, the advanced group is sometimes taught by Mexican marimbistas in intense and compact workshops, both in Chiapas and in Graz.
