The Institute for Ethnomusicology at KunstUniversität, Graz announces a three-year, pre-doc, University Assistant position (75%). The position comes to the institute as part of the project called the ‘Epistemic Power of Music’, a successful proposal submitted to the Austrian National Research Board (FWF) by Prof. Andreas Doerschal (Music Aesthetics) and Prof. Deniz Peters (Performance Studies in Music and Theatre). An abridged version of their joint project proposal can be found below, along with the official advertisement for the position. The position is located in the Institute for Ethnomusicology because the primary investigators in the project hope to attract candidates to work on the project and write a dissertation on the epistemologies of a music that is not considered part of the canon of western art music. Topics in popular music from anywhere in the world, classical musics from outside of the West, folk musics from anywhere in the world are all well within the realm of possible.
The application for the University Assistant position and application for acceptance into the Doctoral School are two separate processes. The first step is applying for the position. Ideally, the successful applicant for the UA position will be able to write and defend a dissertation proposal before the end of October 2021. The deadline to apply for the University Assistant position is 31 July 2021.
If your MA thesis is in a language other than German or English, please send an additional 2-3 page synopsis (that is, more than an abstract) of the work in either German or English, along with the pdf of your MA and other materials.
We look forward to your application.
