Guest lecture by Catherine Foley (University of Limerick)

Last Monday, our returning dear guest Catherine Foley (University of Limerick) presented a paper on "Music, Dance and Place: Issues of Identity in Ireland" as part of our lecture series on recent trends and new directions in ethnomusicology.

ABSTRACT: Since the 1980s, trends in ethnochoreological discourse have focused on issues relating to politics and cultural nationalisms, postcoloniality, identity formations, globalisation, and gender constructions. The theme of embodiment and the power of dance to construct and shape these issues has also contributed to a growing scholarship in the field of ethnochoreology. The twenty-first century, therefore, has inherited diverse trends in ethnochoreological discourse including issues relating to transmission and safeguarding of dance as part of the 2003 UNESCO Convention of Intangible Cultural Heritage. In this paper I look at issues of place and identity formation as complicated issues and I question how the concept of identity continues to be of relevance today with special reference to dance practices and dance communities in Ireland.
