Gastvortrag Prof. Dr. Made Mantle Hood (Malaysia / USA), 14.00 Uhr, Raum 150, Reiterkaserne, Institut für Ethnomusikologie

Inherently interdisciplinary, the field of ethnomusicology assimilates new theoretical approaches in response to research developments from related disciplines. One such approach receiving an increasing amount of attention is musical sustainability, which is rooted in ecology and environmental sciences.Discourse surrounding sustainability focuses researcher’s attention on such topics as marginalized musicians, endangered musics, and dwindling repertoire. An expansion of theoretical territory for ethnomusicology, musical sustainability challenges our thinking about how traditions are negotiated, not only through natural phases of change and ‘reinvention’, but through the active engagement of stewards, revivalists, and even interventionists. But while the environmental analogy is convenient, it is also contentious. Protecting a musical ecosystem as if it existed in isolation negates the reality of intersecting ethnoscapes and virtual social networks. Yet despite the complex global forces of change, there are research trajectories that point towards empowering local musics. In this paper, I would like to share several case studies related to musical sustainability from Indonesia.
