New staff member at the Institute for Ethnomusicology

Dr. Sarah Weiss (PhD, MA - New York University, BA - University of Rochester/ Eastman School of Music) is a scholar working in Southeast Asian cultures and performance, gender studies, postcoloniality, and hybridity studies. She has recently finished a term as Associate Professor in the Humanities and Inaugural Rector of Saga Residential College at Yale-NUS College, a new liberal arts and sciences college in Singapore. She joins the Institute for Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz as a senior faculty member and researcher. She will be teaching classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as taking on student advising along with faculty colleagues Gerd Grupe and Kendra Stepputat. Sarah Weiss notes that she is really enjoying being a full-time academic/performer again. She recently spent ten days in Munich with the Institute’s Balinese Beleganjur ensemble, Balagita directed by Institute faculty member, Kendra Stepputat. In addition, Weiss is holding rehearsals for the Institute’s Central Javanese gamelan ensemble through the summer and beyond. Contact her on Facebook or Messenger if you are interested in participating.

Sarah Weiss has recently finished a new book entitled, "Ritual Soundings: Women Performers and World Religions" scheduled to be published in late 2018 by the University of Illinois Press in their New Perspectives on Gender and Music Series. Here is the cover of her new book.
